A major plan to renew our fleet
In 2021, the public health crisis and its economic impact, the Air France-KLM Board of Directors approved some major strategic investments reflecting our ambition to improve our economic and environmental performance. A firm order was thus placed for 100 latest-generation aircraft (Airbus A320neo), accompanied by purchase rights for a further 60 aircraft, to renew the KLM and Transavia fleets. Compared with previous-generation aircraft, these new aircraft will enable a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, of the order of 15%. In 2021, the Group also took delivery of six Airbus A220s of a total order for 60 aircraft, 13 Airbus A350s of an order for 38 and seven Embraer 195-E2s of an order for 25, amongst the most efficient aircraft in their respective categories.

Air France-KLM is mobilizing the industry and is committed to research and development into innovative solutions notably in the area of design and aeronautics and engine maintenance.
The PROGNOS Solution
Deployed by Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance, is a predictive analysis program based on harnessing big data technologies to offer an effective and innovative aeronautics maintenance service. The environmental benefits of PROGNOS are numerous:
✔A reduction in flight cancellations that can lead to more CO2 emissions due to the scheduling of additional flights to recover grounded customers.
✔A reduction in the number of Quick Return Flight procedures following technical alerts, which require fuel to be jettisoned prior to landing.
✔The optimization of total aircraft fuel consumption through more precise monitoring of the status of equipment.
Electric aircraft: an integral part of future pilot training
Our airlines are not only playing a pioneering role in the new technologies but are also investing in the training of their future pilots on electrically-powered aircraft. In March 2021, Air France became the first airline in the world to introduce the Velis Electro aircraft for the training of its future pilots. Similarly, KLM’s future pilots have realized their first flying hours in electrically-powered aircraft in collaboration with the E-Flight Academy at Teuge Airport.
AZEA Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation
Air France-KLM participates in AZEA. The objective of this Alliance is to prepare the market for the entry into service of zero-emission aircraft (which aligns with the Airbus Zero-e announcements). The novel propulsion technologies used by such aircraft will have a profound impact not only on aircraft design, but also on the fuels and airport infrastructures they require and on the way they are operated.
